Kalku Terms of Service — v1.4 (Beta)

Draft. Requires lawyer review before public launch. Last updated: May 2026.

1. What Kalku Is

Kalku is a personal financial diary. It helps you record, organise, and reflect on your money — income, expenses, loans, savings goals, and more. Kalku is not a bank, not a financial advisor, and not a regulated financial service. It is a record-keeping tool.

2. Your Account

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your PIN and login credentials. You must be at least 18 years old to use Kalku. One human, one personal account. You may, in addition, hold one or more business subscriptions — each business subscription corresponds to one business you operate, and each is billed separately.

3. Annual Plans, Daily Limits, and Rollover

Annual capacity. Each paid plan includes an annual capacity measured in Kalku-units, which resets on your renewal date. Each plan also has a baseline daily limit on how many units you can use in a single day — except for plans that operate on a fair-use ratelimit instead of a daily cap, which is noted on the plan's pricing page.

Rollover and boost. On plans that use a daily cap, if you don't use your full daily limit on any given day, the unused portion remains in your annual capacity. On days when you've accumulated unused capacity from prior light usage, your daily limit may be temporarily increased — up to a maximum of three times your plan's baseline daily limit — to allow you to catch up on logging. The boost is calculated automatically each day; it is not a guarantee. On plans without a daily cap, no boost mechanic applies.

When annual capacity runs out. When your annual capacity is fully used before your renewal date, your account continues to function at a lighter pace (a small synthesized daily cap, currently 5 units per day, matching the Free tier's daily allowance) until renewal. You can purchase a top-up or upgrade your plan at any time to restore your tier's daily limits.

Where to see your capacity. Your current annual capacity, daily limit, boost status, and per-action unit costs are visible on the Capacity & Limits page in the Kalku web dashboard. The chat surfaces (WhatsApp, Telegram) do not display capacity inline — only on the web.

What we may adjust. Daily limits, baseline values, the rollover multiplier, the maximum boost, the synthesized post-exhaustion cap, and per-action unit costs may be adjusted with at least 30 days' notice. Internal cost-protection adjustments to the underlying unit economics may apply globally and without prior notice; these never change the price you paid or the units allocated to your plan during the term you bought, only the internal cost basis we manage against.

4. Free Trial

New registrations receive a 14-day free trial at the trial's own configured caps (independent of any tier). The trial is cap-based — there is no annual wallet, no rollover, no top-ups. Bank statement imports and PDF reports are not available during the trial. The trial does not renew. After 14 days, your account reverts to the Free tier. No second trial is given.

5. Business Subscriptions

A business subscription (Kalku Market or Kalku Mall) attaches to a single business account that you own. The subscription's annual capacity is shared across the business's contributors up to the contributor cap on your plan. Buying a business subscription does not affect your personal subscription, and vice versa. You may own as many business subscriptions as you need.

6. Payments and Renewal

Plans are billed annually. All prices are in Nigerian Naira (NGN). Payments are processed by Paystack. You authorise Kalku to charge your stored payment method on your annual renewal date for the same plan, unless you cancel beforehand.

7. Refunds

Refunds are returned to the original payment method within 5–10 business days via Paystack.

8. Referral Programme

Kalku has a referral programme. Each account is issued a referral code. When a friend joins, links your code, logs the configured number of manual entries during their first month, and converts to a paid plan, both of you receive a credit on your respective accounts. The award amount and qualifying thresholds are published on the Capacity & Limits page and may be adjusted with 30 days' notice. We reserve the right to void awards generated by self-referral, repeated device fingerprints, or other patterns indicating misuse.

9. Data and Privacy

Your financial data belongs to you. We do not sell it, share it with advertisers, or use it for anything other than providing the Kalku service. Diary memory and transaction history are encrypted at rest. We do not pass your raw transaction data to any third-party AI provider — only anonymised or aggregated excerpts are included in LLM context windows for parsing, and those are cleared from provider logs per each provider's data retention policy.

You may export all your data (CSV, JSON) at any time from the web dashboard. You may request account deletion at any time; a 30-day soft-delete window applies, after which all personal data is permanently removed.

10. Service Availability

Kalku is provided "as is." We do not guarantee 100% uptime. We are not liable for financial decisions you make based on data recorded in Kalku.

11. Prohibited Use

You may not use Kalku to record transactions for illegal purposes, to launder money, to commit fraud, or to facilitate harm to others. We reserve the right to suspend accounts where prohibited use is suspected.

12. Training Archive (Opt-In)

Kalku is building toward a Kalku-owned AI model that understands how Nigerians and the African diaspora actually talk about money — in Pidgin, Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and English. To make that possible we ask (but do not require) your permission to keep a de-identified copy of the messages you send to Kalku.

Default opt-OUT. Nothing is archived unless you switch the toggle on from Settings → Privacy.

What gets stripped before any row is stored: your name, contact names from your diary, phone numbers, email addresses, and 10-digit Nigerian bank account numbers. Replaced with @SELF, @CONTACT_N, @PHONE, @EMAIL, @ACCNUM respectively. We keep amounts, categories, dates, and the natural-language phrasing — those are the parts that don't exist anywhere else.

Voice notes — what happens:

The audio file itself is not persisted: we transcribe it and then discard the audio.

The transcribed text goes through the same PII stripper as a typed message and, when you've consented, is stored in the training archive alongside text messages.

If you'd rather no transcript of your voice notes is kept, switch the consent toggle off in Settings → Privacy.

What we never archive, even with consent: bank statement uploads, PIN entries, images, documents (PDFs). The archive is text-only and limited to Skill 1 (the parser that runs on each diary message and on voice-note transcripts).

Erasure on request. From Settings → Privacy you can request full deletion of every archived row tied to your account. Processed within 30 days, typically within minutes. Deletion is permanent — we don't recover deleted rows.

Internal use only. The archive is not shared, sold, or released publicly. Access requires a separately-rotated credential released only at export time; the founder cannot browse it via /cook or any normal admin surface.

13. Changes to These Terms

Material changes to these terms will be notified via in-app message and email at least 30 days before taking effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.
